Description

Queer Art in the Park: The First of Many

We're excited to launch this new quarterly gathering where LGBTQ+ families can slow down, get creative, and build community together. Our hope is that this becomes a space families return to throughout the year, a place to make art, explore parks across the Bay Area, and grow lasting connections with other queer families. Whether this is your first OFC event or you've been part of our community for years, we're so glad you'll be joining us.

What:

Join Our Family Coalition for a relaxed afternoon of creativity, connection, and community with LGBTQ+ families from across the Bay Area. One to two times each quarter, we'll gather at a different local park to make art, enjoy the outdoors, and spend time with families who understand and celebrate the many ways families are formed.

We'll create together around a featured art project while also providing a selection of simple art materials for children and caregivers to explore at their own pace.

Whether your family wants to dive into the featured activity, doodle alongside new friends, or simply enjoy good conversation while the kids create, there's a place for everyone.

Bring a picnic blanket, snacks, and anything that helps make a day at the park comfortable. Come for the whole afternoon or stop by whenever it works for your family. There's no pressure, no artistic experience required, just an opportunity to create, connect, and build community together.

Location: Dolores Park, San Francisco

Featured Art Activity: Nature Prints & Texture Stamping

This month, we'll be creating colorful nature-inspired prints using leaves, flowers, twine, textured materials, and geometric shapes. Families can experiment with rollers and washable paint to stamp unique patterns, layer textures, and create one-of-a-kind artwork inspired by the park around us.

This activity is designed for all ages and experience levels. Younger children can enjoy exploring colors and textures, while older kids and adults can experiment with layering, composition, and printmaking techniques. All materials will be provided just bring your curiosity and creativity!

We'll gather together in one shared creative space with the featured activity and additional art supplies available for little artists and anyone looking to create in their own way.

Share your story

We’re looking for stories by or about LGBTQ+ parents/caregivers or prospective parents, as well as the grandparents or adult children of LGBTQ+ headed families.

Generally, we hope your story will not only inform other families on LGBTQ+ family topics, but also let others know that they are not alone in the journey of advocating for our families.

Whether you feel like you’ve arrived, or your story is not yet complete, know that we can keep one another company all along the way. And it always helps to feel a little less alone.

  • How is your family structured?
  • What is your family formation story?
  • Have you faced challenges in forming your family or parenting because of your identity?
  • How were you able to navigate these challenges?
  • What has been the impact on you/your spouse/children?
  • What systems/people helped guide you?
  • What advice would you have for other LGBTQ-headed families – or perhaps just your younger self?
  • How have you or your family dealt with challenges at schools, medical providers, or elsewhere?
  • Were there times when you expected resistance and instead were welcomed?
  • Do you have opinions you’d like to share about current events, or perhaps movies, TV shows, music, or more?
  • Do you have a story about how Our Family Coalition has had an impact on your or your family that you’d like to share?
