Adventure Playground Excursion

Description

Children climb on ropes, swing on a swing tire, read in an alcove, and paint a wooden structure. "Adventure Playground Excusion" is written in colorful letters composed of ladders, tools, and paintbrushes.

 

Come play with us at the Adventure Playground at the Berkeley Marina!

 

This wonderfully non-traditional playground is a little-known gem in the Bay Area pantheon of outdoor play spots. Filled with scraps of wood of all sizes and shapes, Adventure Playground is an invitation to build. Around the fenced-in yard are towers, shanties, sheds, and buildings of every description built by young visitors. Children and adults may check out hammers and nails, hand saws, or paints and brushes with which to create their visions in plywood and board. Start your own project, ride a zip line or add onto the conglomerations begun by earlier carpenters! Bring a hearty lunch and snacks. We'll have a picnic group afterwards.

 

Designed for kids 7 and older, though younger kids will also enjoy the playground. 

 

Children must be accompanied by adults. To prevent injury, everyone must wear sturdy shoes like tennis shoes, NOT flip flops, sandals, crocs or clogs. Wear clothes that can get dirty, wet, painted on and you may consider bringing a change of clothes for wet or muddy days.

 

This event is free. Donations can be made during registration.

We strive to make our programs accessible to all families. Please register for accommodations that would help your family participate to the fullest (e.g. ASL interpreter, translator, childcare providers experienced with kids with disabilities, large print materials, gluten-free food options, etc.). Adventure Playground is somewhat wheelchair-accessible, with limited access due to dirt and sand. We’re looking for stories by or about LGBTQ+ parents/caregivers or prospective parents, as well as the grandparents or adult children of LGBTQ+ headed families.

Generally, we hope your story will not only inform other families on LGBTQ+ family topics, but also let others know that they are not alone in the journey of advocating for our families.

Whether you feel like you’ve arrived, or your story is not yet complete, know that we can keep one another company all along the way. And it always helps to feel a little less alone.

  • Have you faced challenges in forming your family or parenting because of your identity?
  • How were you able to navigate these challenges?
  • What has been the impact on you/your spouse/children?
  • What systems/people helped guide you?
  • What advice would you have for other LGBTQ-headed families – or perhaps just your younger self?
  • How have you or your family dealt with challenges at schools, medical providers, or elsewhere?
  • Were there times when you expected resistance and instead were welcomed?
  • Do you have opinions you’d like to share about current events, or perhaps movies, TV shows, music, or more?
  • Do you have a story about how Our Family Coalition has had an impact on your or your family that you’d like to share?
