Navigate, Advocate, Elevate: A Practical Skills Series taught by KidPower || Part 1
Description
Part 1: Advocating for Yourself in Healthcare Settings & Social Systems
Presented by KidPower
In today’s shifting political climate, LGBTQ+ people and families are facing mounting challenges. Knowing how to advocate for yourself and your family is essential, but we know that this isn’t always easy.
This series provided by KidPower (kidpower.org) is designed to make advocacy feel approachable, powerful, and practical.
This session will help you build the skills needed to advocate for yourself confidently and effectively in healthcare settings as well as in the broader social systems we navigate every day. Our goal is to support you in feeling comfortable, confident, and competent when engaging with institutions that have historically oppressed our community.
While we may use healthcare examples, the strategies you’ll practice are transferable across many contexts, including workplaces, social services, and community spaces.
In this session, you’ll practice skills you can use to:
-
Speak up clearly with providers, administrators, and decision-makers
-
Navigate bias and microaggressions in professional settings
-
Protect your emotional well-being while advocating for your needs
-
Persist when you meet resistance or dismissal
-
Set and maintain strong personal boundaries
Special Guest: OFC’s Executive Director, Mimi Demissew, will share a timely policy overview - contextualizing recent changes, highlighting protections available to LGBTQ+ families, and offering insights you can leverage in real-world systems.
